I was in ASA, but I served mostly with the Air Force in the Mediterranean. I was the only Army person at the 6931st Air Force Security Station in Heraklion, Crete. Arabic Language specialist.

I am STILL trying to find all the words to the decidedly unofficial ASA Song about our patch. "Blue is for the water we never crossed, Yellow is the reason why. Red is for the blood we shed - as you see there is no red... very tongue in cheek, of course!

Originally signed up for 4 years but when Vietnam ended, took advantage of the RIF and got out a year early in December 73. Was supposed to be stationed at Sinop, Turkey but was kept at Devens as an instructor, after finishing 33D school. To my knowledge, not one Viet Cong made it into Boston, while I was there, so I wanted to take partial credit for that.

Comments/Questions: Just visited Ft. Devens for the first time in 39 years. I was stationed there from Jan. 1975 until Nov. 1977. Met my husband, Bobby McFarland, there. We are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary! The trip back to Massachusetts was the best surprise he could have given me. I worked at Brigade and he was 33C and had just returned from Sinop. Of course, that was his second tour at Devens as he did his MOS training there from 9/73 - 5/74.

Comments Pete McCoy (also on this site) and I who coincidentally were tent-mates and also worked together as a team also on this page. We flew our van, jeep, genny, etc., along with 8 others to Phu Bai in April, 1962 in a USAF C-124 and set up our TRD-4 just north of the end of the runway at the airport. We lived with the MAAGV team housed there in their own building. First permanent ASA north of Danang at the time. Fondly recall our mates including ASA, MAAGV and Aussies and found the work very interesting. Our call sign was RYS7 which from time to time runs through my mind.

Richard Mohr - I was a lingie with 509th RRG from late May 1969 to July 1971.  I was at 330th RRC most of that time.  I live in Fountain Valley, California just south of Westminster's Little Saigon.  On Veterans Day I went over to the Vietnam War memorial in Westminster and had a nice conversation with a former Vietnamese army captain who was in a re-education camp for four and a half years.  My daughter and two sons attended a high school that was seventy percent Vietnamese.

Comments Never thought I would come to visit here. Lots of memories we all share from both there and here. Only lately with other veterans opening up and easing off some of the anger, for my grandkids. I thought about putting together my memory box from the Army. Can anyone help with Unit citations. I remember receiving a paper from General Westmoreland for Unit merit. I have since lost all documents (house fire = homeless for 3 years) Maybe I will be lucky to find a Wort hog still out there. Thanks for any response. 06

Comments As a Specialist 4th Class, I was the security clerk of the Ft. Bliss ASA group locally known as the United States Aviation Electronic Warfare Company that reported only to the Pentagon. One of our missions was to manage several modified Beechcraft Queen Air planes which had King Air wings instead to handle the extra weight the planes were to carry. The planes could not be painted army green because the 50 lbs. of paint would overload them. As ASA members, we were exempt from pulling any local post duties. No non-ASA members were allowed to enter our barracks that were under ASA armed guard 24x7.

Gary Mousseau - I attended DLIWC in Monterey from June 1970 until June 1971 to earn my MOS - 98G2LKP - Voice Intercept.  After language school, I spent the summer in San Angelo, TX at Goodfellow AFB learning voice intercept/radios, etc.
I landed at Camp Humphreys in September of 1971; and, after a week or so of in processing, took a helicopter ride up to KangHwa-Do for duty at the 226th USASA Company.  My shift supervisor, Bill Gaughan (Sp.) had been in Korea when the USS Pueblo (Commander Bucher) was taken.  Bill told me that North Korea went silent for 3 months after the Pueblo was taken.  After that, our intelligence gathering was almost nil.  Dan Myers was stationed with me on KangHwa and took some excellent photos of the Island during our time there.  Incidentally, Dan and I are still in regular contact.
I was able to take Christmas leave to Michigan for Christmas 1971.  Shortly after I returned in January of 1972, the mission was moved to USASA Field Station Korea on Camp Humphreys.  Once there, we hardly ever got any meaningful intercept, and life got pretty routine.
In the early spring of 1972, President Nixon invented the word "Vietnamization;" and, an early-out program was invented for any soldiers serving in the Pacific/Asian region.  I was eligible for release in May of 1972 and left the Army after only 26 months of my 3-year enlistment to return home and go back to college.
During the spring of 1972, US soldiers from Viet Nam were using our ASA barracks as a stopover in the out-processing from Viet Nam.  They loved Anjung-Ni!   Our 2-man room was converted into a 6-man billet while they waited for transport and out processing at the west-coast centers of Oakland and Seattle.  They were a pretty crazy bunch, having just left the bush in Viet Nam.  I have lots of other stories to tell (like most men in my generation), but will spare you, for now. Thanks for maintaining your website.

Comments I started out training for 05H, but could not pass 18wpm. Went to work as a cook. In Vietnam, did a little Morse intercept work, did a little radio maintenance, other things as needed. I won't say I loved being a soldier, but I disliked even more being frowned upon after leaving the service to attend University. I imagine most here could offer similar stories and sentiments.

Jim Norrbom - Joined Army July 13, 1956 along with my brother Fred (who has passed away).  Went to school at Ft. Devens from Oct.56 to March 57.  Stationed at Camp Sobe Okinawa from April of 57 to June of 59 was an 058.2 Am Retired and live in Burnsville, MN. I belong to the ASA Okinawa Assoc.

Richard Norton - MOS 71L20

Years of Service 1967-1969

Duty Stations After basic at Fort Campbell, KY (after being drafted, I first was sent to Fort Ord in Monterey, CA, but due to the meningitis outbreak there, they quarantined the base and transferred new inductees to different forts), then advanced training at Ft. Eustis, VA, I was "inducted" into the USASAPAC and stationed at Helemano Military Reservation in Wahiawa, Hawaii and remained there until my discharge.

Comments I spent my 17 months (after advanced training to discharge) at Helemano in the S-2 primarily focused on matters concerning overseas activities by soldiers with security clearances. I had graduated from college and was working at the U.S. Treasury when I was drafted. I was told that because of my degree and prior confidential security clearance with the U.S. Treasury, ASA wanted me. Generally, I understood that ASA required a 4-year enlistment. I enjoyed my tour of duty in Hawaii. I met one of my dearest friends - Byron Tobeck - who was in the S-3 at Helemano. We kept in constant contact when we left the Service. Unfortunately, he passed away in February 2003. My immediate senior officer was Major Francis Huber - a great man to work for. I do not know if he is still alive. I have lots of fond memories of my time in ASA.

Pat O'Leary - Just checking into your FB page.  I was ASA from 69  to 89 as an 05K4HK2.  I did most of my time in Germany with tours at Rothwesten, Border Sites, Berlin, and Bad Aibling.  I also did a couple tours stateside in various training commands: Devens and Pensacola.
After retiring from the Army, I moved back to California.  After a couple jobs, I got hired by SonicWALL (Later Dell SonicWALL) and they moved me to Phoenix AZ where I live now.
I am also very active volunteering with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Duty Stations With my twin brother: Basic Training - Fort Jackson South Carolina AIT - Fort Gordon Georgia First Oversea duty Station (with my twin brother) - 4th USASAFS Kagnew Station Asmara Ethiopia (then) Eritrea (now) Second Oversea duty Station - 7th RRFS (Radio Research Field Station) Udorn, Thailand

Comments When my twin and I graduated from high school (1968) Vietnam was going pretty strong so it was either wait for the draft or join and have a little bit of choice of what we did for our time with Uncle Sam so we joined. Got talked into signing up for the Army Security Agency which sounded a lot better than being a grunt. We went through basic training (Fort Jackson), Advanced Individual Training (Fort Gordon) Signal School (72B) and our first overseas tour (4th USASAFS Asmara) AFRICA together. After working and partying for 18 months over there Uncle Sam decided to separate us. He sent me to the 7th RRFS and my twin (Brady) to Fort Devens where he stayed about 4 months and where it also snowed several times while he was there. So he put in a 1049 for Vietnam which they ready processed. He arrived there in December of '70 and was stationed at the 224th Aviation (BearCat) just outside of Saigon. In working in the CommCenter at Operations I had access to the "Class A" phones there. So when "at work" I would call him to see what he was up to. The hardest part was getting pass the Vietnamese phone operators in Saigon. The first time I called I asked the operator for the 224th and she says "you mean BearCat"? Not knowing they used cover names I said "no I want the 224th" whereas she said again "you mean BearCat"? That time I said "yes" and was connected to the CommCenter at the 224th. After calling him "a few times" all I had to do was ask for Brady and (if he wasn't working) they would go get him so we could talk for awhile at Uncle Sams expense (of course)

Comments Did not realize there were so many ASA MOS's. Be very interesting to know what you all did. Scanned all the names I could find with 05K20 MOS's and came up empty. Too bad, a great group of guys at Kuma, big fun. Like me, they are all half dead by now, but what a ride! At the time, I could not wait for it to be over, but now I think back on what I did and who did it with me and it was a hallmark time of my life. Hope you all had a great life and more to come. Wish I could shake all of your hands.

MOS 67B20, 67N20 Fixed & Rotary Wing wrench & crew chief with standard TS/C

Just ran across this link to Korean ASA Vets. I was stationed at 508th HQ Yong Dong Po from June '67 to 'June '68. 12 months only as a screw up in orders sent me to Davis Station Saigon first. The 30 days there building a giant bunker helped to save the lives of many ASA guys during the Tet offensive Jan 68 I glad to say. At the 508th, I was a newly enlisted 67N20  fixed wing mechanic/crew chief servicing U-6 Beavers and H-23G helicopters. Our pilots were CWO (4?) Howard Wells, Major Jim Beattie from Minneapolis, MN, Cpt (forgot first name) Taylor, and Lt Tom Ryland. I flew with Cpt Taylor to Camp Humphreys & Soc Cho Ri on different occasions, picking up data material from those stations. My favorite was Soc Cho Ri because we could pick up buckets of shrimp to bring back to my guys at Yoido Island which was our base of ops in the middle of the Han River, not far from HQs. I also remember having a small collection of green glass bulbs that the fisherman used as floats on their nets. Looking for Dan Hysell and Al Hite that were part of our crew at the Teeny Weenie Airlines.  Brent Ostwald  (Ozzie). Would like to locate Joe Walker who was a friend in Korea and later met at Ft Bragg. Was invited to Thanksgiving weekend in Pittsburgh with his welcoming family '68. Thanks Joe.
